About the Department

The Department of Defence Studies focuses on the study of military processes, institutions, and behaviours, including the theory and application of organized warfare. In 1973, Baiswara Degree College was the first to introduce Defence Studies as a subject. Previously, the faculty had a galaxy of distinguished scholars. Captain Brij Bhushan Singh, an NCC officer, was appointed as first teacher of the department. Under his efficient management, regional students’ interest in the subject increased, leading to the creation of an additional teacher post and the appointment of Dr. Nirmal Nath Singh.
Following the retirement of Captain Brij Bhushan Singh, Dr. Arun Kumar Singh joined as a teacher on the faculty. The Directorate created a new post of permanent teacher due to the increasing number of students and appointed Dr. Kundan Kumar in 2003. After the retirement of Dr. Nirmal Nath Singh, Dr. Ajay Kumar Sinha took over his position. Dr. Arun Kumar Singh retired from service in 2019. Dr. Praveen Singh became an Assistant Professor in 2022. He holds a PhD from the University of Allahabad.
The Defence Studies department aims to train graduates who are critical thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and skilled practitioners capable of developing and implementing effective security strategies in an ever-changing global security environment. The department strives to enhance higher education, equipping its students to serve the country by fostering their personal and academic growth. The department has an excellent lab facility for the undergraduate students. The department provides a practical lab where students can conduct experiments and exercises related to various types of maps, including typographical, relief, and outline maps.
