About the Department :
The Department of English is one of the oldest and most reputable departments of Baiswara Degree College. The hard work of its faculty members, who have traditionally combined excellence in research with a dedication to pedagogy, has steadily enhanced its reputation over the years. In pursuit of providing an academic and scholastic ambience, the department has always motivated debates, discussions, and writings. The department has a rich tradition, a splendid past, and a glorious present. In the past, this prestigious department had a galaxy of distinguished scholars on its faculty. Among the scholars, one can mention Dr. D.C. Mishra, Dr. K.C. Srivastava, and Dr. Madan Singh. Dr. S.K. Shukla and Dr. I.P. Singh were renowned teachers. A couple of teachers were known primarily for the quality of their teaching. This category includes Dr. B.N. Vishwakarma and Dr. Rekha Yadav.
At present, the department is heavily loaded with creative talents, sharp critical focus, and a host of dedicated teachers. Individually, some are working on creative writing, translation projects, exploring cultural studies, and addressing feminist issues. Dr. S.A.R. Abidi, a PhD from the University of Allahabad, is also a creative writer. Dr. Naveen Kumar Vishwakarma is known for his translation skills. Dr. Priya Dubey has specialized in drama studies. Dr. Surya Prakash Verma holds a PhD from IIT Roorkee. He has published extensively on film studies. The academic achievement of this department lies in nurturing its students’ creativity and scholarly abilities. Many students are first-generation English learners, and many of them do not have any grounding in English studies. However, the department trains them and transforms them into competent graduates who succeed professionally and serve locally, regionally, and globally. It offers BA and MA courses in traditional literary studies with various electives to meet the diverse interests of both faculty and students.
